Trump Voter ID Bill Passes House After Speaker Johnson Ends GOP Revolt

The House of Representatives has passed President Trump's voter identification legislation, known as the Save America Act, after Speaker Mike Johnson navigated a difficult internal rebellion within his own party to get the bill through. The path to passage was far from smooth, involving days of stalled action and last-minute negotiations. A Rocky Road Through the House Floor Just days before the bill's passage, a renewed rebellion among House Republicans had brought action on the floor to a standstill. The internal pushback was serious enough that Speaker Johnson made the decision to send members home early ahead of the Fourth of July holiday, effectively pausing progress on the legislation until tensions could be addressed. The rebellion reflected divisions within the Republican party over specific provisions in the voter ID bill, with some members expressing concerns that ultimately required further negotiation before they were willing to support the legislation. Mexico Teen Gilberto Mora Makes History With Start vs. Ecuador

Mexico Teenager Gilberto Mora Makes History With Start vs. Ecuador

Seventeen-year-old Gilberto Mora added another line to his rapidly growing list of records on Tuesday, becoming the second-youngest player ever to start a World Cup knockout match as co-host Mexico beat Ecuador 2-0 at Mexico City Stadium to reach the Round of 16.

A Record Just Behind Pele

Mora took the field at 17 years and 259 days old, placing him only behind Brazilian legend Pele among players to start a World Cup knockout game. Pele was 17 years and 239 days old when he started for Brazil at the 1958 tournament — a record that has stood for nearly seven decades. Mora missed matching it by just 20 days.

The Tijuana midfielder was also the youngest player to start in this World Cup since Nigeria's Femi Opabunmi, who was 17 years and 101 days old against England back in 2002.

A Breakout Tournament for the Teenager

This was Mora's second straight start for El Tri, and just his fifth appearance in a Mexico shirt overall. He first turned heads earlier in the tournament, coming off the bench in Mexico's group-stage opener against South Africa to become the youngest Mexican ever to play in a World Cup match, at 17 years and 240 days old. That moment broke a 96-year-old record held by Manuel "Chaquetas" Rosas, who was 18 when he played in 1930.

Mora then started in Mexico's group-stage finale, and again against Ecuador in the knockout round, making him the youngest player in Mexican history to both start and come on as a substitute at a World Cup.

Mexico's Dominant Group Stage

Mexico entered the knockout rounds unbeaten, winning all three group matches without conceding a single goal. That run made Mexico only the sixth team in World Cup history to sweep the group stage without conceding, and just the second host nation to do it since Italy managed the feat in 1990.

The win over Ecuador also marked Mexico's first World Cup knockout-stage victory in 40 years, adding extra weight to a tournament already being defined by their teenage star.

Where Mora Came From

Mora's path to the World Cup has been unusually fast. As recently as 2024, he had no professional playing experience and was still an academy prospect at Tijuana. He made his senior club debut in a friendly in January 2025, becoming, at 16, the youngest player in the club's history, before his first meaningful senior minutes came during the 2025 CONCACAF Gold Cup.

Football runs in the family — his father, also named Gilberto Mora, was a professional footballer and now coaches Tijuana's U17 and academy sides. Club owner Jorge Alberto has said that even while training with older players as a teenager, Mora "processed the game differently."

His agent, Rafaela Pimenta, described his relationship with the sport simply: the ball has always been his closest companion, on and off the pitch.

What's Next

With Mexico through to the Round of 16 as co-hosts and Mora firmly established as one of the standout young talents of the tournament, all eyes will be on whether the 17-year-old can add even more history before the World Cup is done.
