Trump Voter ID Bill Passes House After Speaker Johnson Ends GOP Revolt

The House of Representatives has passed President Trump's voter identification legislation, known as the Save America Act, after Speaker Mike Johnson navigated a difficult internal rebellion within his own party to get the bill through. The path to passage was far from smooth, involving days of stalled action and last-minute negotiations. A Rocky Road Through the House Floor Just days before the bill's passage, a renewed rebellion among House Republicans had brought action on the floor to a standstill. The internal pushback was serious enough that Speaker Johnson made the decision to send members home early ahead of the Fourth of July holiday, effectively pausing progress on the legislation until tensions could be addressed. The rebellion reflected divisions within the Republican party over specific provisions in the voter ID bill, with some members expressing concerns that ultimately required further negotiation before they were willing to support the legislation. Mexico vs Ecuador 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 32 Match Report: El Tri End 40-Year Knockout Drought With 2-0 Win

Mexico vs Ecuador 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 32: Quiñones and Jiménez Fire El Tri Into Round of 16

Mexico ended a 40-year wait for a World Cup knockout stage victory on Tuesday night, beating Ecuador 2-0 in the Round of 32 at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. Julián Quiñones and Raúl Jiménez were the heroes, with both goals arriving inside the first half to send co-hosts Mexico into the Round of 16. It was a historic night in front of a packed home crowd and one Mexico fans will not forget quickly.

A Delayed Start Under the Azteca Lights

Kick-off was pushed back by approximately one hour after a severe thunderstorm hit Mexico City, forcing players and fans to wait out the weather before play could begin. Once the delay was over and the referee's whistle finally sounded, Mexico wasted no time making their home advantage count.

How the Goals Were Scored

Quiñones opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, cutting inside the box after a transition move before powering a shot into the top corner. It was exactly the kind of clinical finishing Mexico had been looking for throughout the group stage, and the Azteca erupted. Met Office

Nine minutes later, the lead was doubled. Jiménez pounced on an error from Ecuador goalkeeper Joel Ordóñez before combining neatly with Quiñones in a give-and-go move and rifling a shot into the corner of the net. At 2-0 after 31 minutes, the tie was effectively over.

Ecuador Struggle to Respond

Ecuador controlled 57% of possession across the 90 minutes but were unable to turn that into genuine chances, finishing the match with seven shots and just one on target. Their best opportunity came early, before Mexico took control  Yeboah rattled the woodwork with a close-range effort in what proved to be Ecuador's clearest sight of goal all night.

The second half brought little improvement for Ecuador. Their attacking play was limited to hopeful crosses from deep positions that rarely troubled Mexico goalkeeper Raúl Rangel, who was rarely tested throughout the evening.

A Chippy Finish

The final minutes turned feisty. Ecuador's Piero Hincapié was shown a red card in stoppage time for covering his mouth while exchanging words with a Mexico player, while Moisés Caicedo picked up a yellow card for a late foul in the dying moments. The tension in the closing stages reflected Ecuador's frustration at being unable to find a way back into the match.

What This Means for Both Teams

For Mexico, the win ends a painful 40-year wait for a knockout stage victory  their last coming at the 1986 World Cup, which they also hosted. Playing on home soil clearly made a difference, with the Azteca crowd behind them from the first whistle to the last. Javier Aguirre's side have now kept a clean sheet throughout the tournament and march into the Round of 16 with confidence high.

Mexico will now face the winner of England vs DR Congo on Sunday, with that Round of 16 tie also set to be played in Mexico City  meaning El Tri will once again have the Azteca roaring behind them.

For Ecuador, it marks the end of their first appearance in the World Cup knockout stages in 20 years, with their run ending at the first hurdle despite an encouraging group stage campaign that included a famous upset over Germany.

Verdict

This was a dominant home performance from Mexico when it mattered most. The goals were well-taken, the defensive structure was solid throughout, and the co-hosts delivered exactly what their supporters needed. Ecuador had moments but never truly threatened to turn the match around. Mexico look like a team capable of making a deep run especially with the Azteca still to come in the next round.
