Trump Voter ID Bill Passes House After Speaker Johnson Ends GOP Revolt

The House of Representatives has passed President Trump's voter identification legislation, known as the Save America Act, after Speaker Mike Johnson navigated a difficult internal rebellion within his own party to get the bill through. The path to passage was far from smooth, involving days of stalled action and last-minute negotiations. A Rocky Road Through the House Floor Just days before the bill's passage, a renewed rebellion among House Republicans had brought action on the floor to a standstill. The internal pushback was serious enough that Speaker Johnson made the decision to send members home early ahead of the Fourth of July holiday, effectively pausing progress on the legislation until tensions could be addressed. The rebellion reflected divisions within the Republican party over specific provisions in the voter ID bill, with some members expressing concerns that ultimately required further negotiation before they were willing to support the legislation. 5.6 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Northern California Near Redwood Valley — What We Know So Far

A powerful earthquake struck Northern California early on Wednesday morning, June 24, 2026, sending shockwaves through communities across the region and triggering emergency alerts on the phones of millions of residents. The United States Geological Survey registered the quake at a magnitude of 5.6, with its epicentre located approximately seven miles north of Redwood Valley in Mendocino County. The tremor hit at 8:10am Pacific Time and was felt as far away as Sacramento, the San Francisco Bay Area and Eureka — a spread of hundreds of miles from the source.

What Happened — The Key Facts

The earthquake struck at a depth of approximately five miles beneath the surface, a relatively shallow depth that contributed to the intensity of shaking felt across such a wide area. According to the USGS, around 80,000 people experienced moderate to very strong shaking near the epicentre, while approximately ten million people felt weak to light shaking across a much larger zone extending across Northern and Central California.

Shortly after the main quake, six aftershocks of magnitude 2.5 or greater were recorded in the same area near Redwood Valley and the neighbouring town of Willits. USGS physical scientist Robert Michael De Groot confirmed this is entirely normal following a quake of this size and warned that residents should continue to expect further shaking in the days and weeks ahead. The USGS also confirmed there is no tsunami threat associated with this earthquake.

Importantly, scientists noted that this is the largest earthquake recorded on the Maacama Fault in 75 years. UC Berkeley Seismology Lab research scientist Amy Williamson confirmed the Maacama Fault is an extension of the Hayward Fault, one of Northern California's most significant seismic features. The earthquake serves as a stark reminder of the region's vulnerability to major seismic activity.

ShakeAlert — Millions Warned Seconds Before Shaking Began

One of the most remarkable aspects of Wednesday's earthquake was the performance of California's earthquake early warning system. More than one million Californians received a ShakeAlert notification on their phones before the shaking began, giving them precious seconds to drop, cover and hold on.

California Governor Gavin Newsom confirmed in a statement that the ShakeAlert system activated successfully and urged all Californians to download the MyShake app to ensure they receive future earthquake alerts. Governor Newsom said the earthquake serves as a timely reminder that major seismic events in California are a matter of when, not if. He encouraged residents to stay prepared and take advantage of the early warning tools now available to them.

For many residents across Northern California, the alert arrived only seconds before the ground began to shake — but those seconds made a real difference. People reported having just enough time to step away from windows, move to safer positions and brace themselves before the strongest shaking arrived.

Damage and Impact on Local Communities

Initial reports from Mendocino County indicate that the earthquake caused localised damage across several communities, though officials confirmed there have been no deaths and that major structural damage appears to have been avoided. Some injuries were reported, though the full extent was not immediately confirmed by authorities.Mendocino County earthquake June 2026, California earthquake ShakeAlert, Redwood Valley earthquake damage, Northern California earthquake today, USGS earthquake California.

In Redwood Valley, the owner of Redwood Valley Market described merchandise falling from shelves throughout the store. Employees at Testa Northern California earthquake Redwood Valley 2026 Coffee and Wine in the same area were photographed cleaning up in the aftermath of the quake. In nearby Willits, the manager of a local gas station reported power outages and stock falling from shelves.

In Ukiah, residents described intense shaking that felt like something had struck their buildings. One local worker at Club Calpella Restaurant said she had just turned on the open sign and walked into the kitchen when the quake hit, describing the sensation as the building being struck from outside.

Pacific Gas and Electric confirmed that approximately 8,000 customers in Mendocino County lost power following the quake, reduced from a peak of around 10,000 customers in the immediate aftermath. PG&E confirmed there was no damage to critical facilities or the gas network and that its emergency response teams had been activated to assess and repair any issues. By evening, PG&E had restored power to more than half of affected customers, with around 4,660 still without electricity.

California's Earthquake Risk — A Constant Reality

Wednesday's earthquake is a powerful reminder of why California invests heavily in earthquake preparedness and early warning infrastructure. The state sits along several major fault lines, including the San Andreas Fault, the Hayward Fault and now the Maacama Fault, which produced Wednesday's significant tremor.

Seismologists consistently warn that California is overdue for a major earthquake along several of its key fault systems. While Wednesday's 5.6 magnitude event caused relatively limited damage, the USGS assessment notes that some damage was possible and that the impact would remain relatively localised. A significantly larger earthquake on the same fault system could cause considerably more widespread destruction across communities from San Francisco northward.

For residents throughout Northern California, the message from authorities is clear — now is the time to ensure emergency preparedness kits are stocked, that the MyShake app is downloaded and active, and that all household members know what to do when the ground begins to shake.
