Trump Voter ID Bill Passes House After Speaker Johnson Ends GOP Revolt

The House of Representatives has passed President Trump's voter identification legislation, known as the Save America Act, after Speaker Mike Johnson navigated a difficult internal rebellion within his own party to get the bill through. The path to passage was far from smooth, involving days of stalled action and last-minute negotiations. A Rocky Road Through the House Floor Just days before the bill's passage, a renewed rebellion among House Republicans had brought action on the floor to a standstill. The internal pushback was serious enough that Speaker Johnson made the decision to send members home early ahead of the Fourth of July holiday, effectively pausing progress on the legislation until tensions could be addressed. The rebellion reflected divisions within the Republican party over specific provisions in the voter ID bill, with some members expressing concerns that ultimately required further negotiation before they were willing to support the legislation. Germany vs Ecuador World Cup 2026 Preview: Can La Tri Shock the Group E Winners and Stay Alive?

Germany's 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage comes to a close on Thursday, June 25, when Julian Nagelsmann's relentless side face Ecuador at 3:45pm ET. Germany have been the most impressive team of the tournament so far, winning both their opening matches while scoring nine goals without conceding a single one. Ecuador, on the other hand, are fighting for their tournament lives, knowing that only a win can keep their knockout stage hopes alive.

What Is at Stake for Both Teams?

Germany have already secured their place in the Round of 32 and arrive at this match as Group E winners. With an 11-game winning streak behind them and the best attacking record of any team at this World Cup, Nagelsmann's side will be looking to maintain their momentum heading into the knockout rounds. A third consecutive win would confirm Germany as one of the most feared teams remaining in the competition.

For Ecuador, the situation could not be more desperate. After suffering a late 1-0 defeat to Ivory Coast in their opening match, La Tri were then held to a goalless draw by Curaçao — a result that shocked the footballing world and left their World Cup hopes hanging by a thread. Ecuador need to beat Germany and hope that Curaçao defeat Ivory Coast in the group's other simultaneous fixture. Even then, the goal difference would need to fall in Ecuador's favour for them to advance as one of the best third-placed teams.

A defeat tonight would confirm Ecuador's elimination, making this a third consecutive group stage exit for a nation that had been hoping to make a breakthrough at this expanded 48-team tournament.

Germany  The Tournament's Standout Side

Germany have been genuinely impressive at this World Cup. Under Julian Nagelsmann, they have combined relentless pressing with clinical finishing to produce two dominant performances that have left opponents with no realistic way of stopping them. Nine goals scored and none conceded is a record that only a handful of World Cup sides in history have matched at this stage of the tournament.

The debate heading into Thursday's match centres on whether Nagelsmann will make significant changes given Germany's qualification is already secured. Key players including Ilkay Gündoğan and Deniz Undav have both been in excellent form, and the question of whether Undav starts against Ecuador has been a major talking point in the German press in the days leading up to the match.

Even a heavily rotated Germany side would represent an enormous challenge for an Ecuador team that has struggled to create clear chances in either of their first two matches.

Ecuador  Desperate and Dangerous

There is an argument that Ecuador's back-against-the-wall situation could actually make them more dangerous on Thursday. A team with nothing to lose can sometimes produce their best football — freed from the tactical caution that comes with trying to protect a result.

Ecuador drew their goalkeeper Eloy Room produced a goalkeeping masterclass to earn Ecuador a point against Curaçao, but the lack of goals in that match exposed real concerns about Ecuador's attacking threat. Against Germany's compact defensive structure, finding a way through will require a significant improvement in quality and creativity in the final third.

The head-to-head record between these two nations is not encouraging for Ecuador either. In their only previous World Cup meeting — at the 2006 tournament in Germany — the hosts won 3-0 in a match that effectively ended Ecuador's tournament at that stage. A more recent international friendly ended in a 4-2 victory for Germany, further underlining the gap between the two sides at the current moment.

Prediction

Germany are overwhelming favourites and it is difficult to see past a comfortable German victory on Thursday. Even with potential rotation, the squad depth available to Nagelsmann means the quality will remain high throughout. Ecuador will fight hard and the occasion will drive them to give everything, but the gap in class between these two sides has been clear throughout this tournament.

Germany to win 3-0 or better, with goals spread across the squad as Nagelsmann uses the opportunity to give fringe players valuable World Cup minutes ahead of the knockout rounds.
