UK Weather: Met Office Forecasts Fresh Heatwave Conditions Early Next Week After Record-Breaking June Heat
UK Set for Fresh Burst of Heat After Record-Breaking June Temperatures
The UK is bracing for another possible spell of heatwave conditions early next week, just days after the country recorded its hottest June temperature on record. According to the latest Met Office update, a largely settled and noticeably cooler period is expected through the early part of this week, offering some relief before temperatures climb again.
A New June Temperature Record
Last Friday, the Met Office confirmed a new provisional UK June temperature record after Santon Downham in Suffolk recorded 37.3°C in real time. A separate reading from Lingwood in Norfolk later came in even higher, at 37.7°C, on the same day. If verified, this would officially become the new highest temperature recorded in the UK during the month of June, surpassing the previous record of 35.6°C set back in 1976 and 1957.
This latest spike followed an intense and prolonged hot spell that saw the Met Office issue a rare Red Extreme Heat warning for parts of central and southern England and Wales, alongside several Amber warnings covering wider areas. That period of extreme heat was also marked by unusually high humidity and Tropical Nights, where overnight temperatures failed to drop below 20°C, adding extra strain on people's ability to cool down and recover from the daytime heat.
Met Office Chief Forecaster Neil Armstrong said the coming days will bring a welcome change of pace for many. "With last week's heat behind us, there will be much relief for many this week as we are forecasting a pleasant week of summer with temperatures in the low to mid 20s°C for many," he said.
From Tuesday onward, conditions are expected to turn more changeable, with showers and longer spells of rain, particularly across the north and west of the country. Some of these showers could turn thundery, with the Met Office flagging the potential for a thunderstorm warning later in the week. The south and southeast are expected to stay comparatively drier and milder through this period.
Another Heatwave on the Horizon
Despite the short cooldown, forecasters are already watching a possible return to heatwave conditions early next week. Deputy Chief Forecaster Tony Wisson noted that temperatures over the coming weekend could approach the high 20s°C across parts of England, with the southeast potentially nearing 30°C, and Wales seeing mid to high 20s°C.
However, this next warm spell is not expected to match the intensity of the previous week's heatwave. "Although a return to heatwave conditions is looking increasingly likely for some areas, the likelihood of such extreme high temperatures or high levels of humidity as last week is currently low," Wisson said.
Verdict
After one of the most intense June heat events in UK recorded history, the weather is set to ease before potentially building again early next week. While forecasters don't expect a repeat of last week's record-breaking extremes, southern and eastern parts of the UK should stay prepared for another round of warm to hot conditions in the days ahead.
